The University of North Florida, commonly referred to as UNF, is a public university located in Jacksonville, which is the largest city in the US state of Florida and the county seat of Duval County. Jacksonville is also the principal city in the Greater Jacksonville Metropolitan Area, which has a population of approximately 1 313 300 inhabitants, with most of the inhabitants residing within Jacksonville’s city limits, fact which makes it the most populated city in the state, including the 12th most populated city in USA.
UNF was founded in 1969, first opening its doors in 1972, to an enrollment of little over 2000 Junior students. Today, the university has an enrollment of more than 16 000 students and 500 full-time faculty staff, consisting of 5 separate colleges, with noted coastal biology, business, jazz, and nursing educational programs. According to The Princeton Review (2006), UNF is 5th among "America's Best Value Colleges", and it is also the "Best Southeastern College".
There are 23 major buildings on UNF’s campus, and many of the buildings are named after individuals who have helped the university with donations or otherwise, in the past years, such as the Coggin College of Business, the J. J. Daniel Hall or the John E. Mathews, Jr. Computer and Information Sciences Building. Due to the fact that the campus area has considerably grown to a size of 1 300 acres, since 2007, the university began to provide a shuttle service, which runs throughout UNF campus.
The athletic teams from UNF are known as the North Florida Ospreys, who compete in the NCAA Division I, the university being currently a member of the NCAA’s Atlantic Sun Conference, in 17 varsity sports, being best known for their achievements in baseball, golf and tennis, in which they’ve experienced most of their victories, in the past years. Among other achievements, the Ospreys brought home 4 national titles, from which 2 are in men’s golf (’91 and ’93) and 2 are in women’s titles (’86 and ’94).
The list of notable UNF alumni contains resonant names such as William T. Abare, Jr. - President of Flagler College, Patrick Faber - Minister of Education in Belize, Nat Glover - former sheriff of Jacksonville, Florida, Mark Vitner - Director and Senior Economist for Wells Fargo, as well as several other people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
